Ahmed Alkaliby, MD, PhD, is a fellowship-trained retina specialist with a distinguished international background in ophthalmology, spanning Egypt, Europe, and the United States. He currently practices at Florida Retina Institute, where he provides advanced medical and surgical care for complex retinal conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment.
Dr. Alkaliby earned his Doctor of Medicine as valedictorian and completed both his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Tanta University in Egypt. He holds a PhD in retinal research and later completed a prestigious vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of California’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, where he trained in cutting-edge surgical techniques and participated in clinical trials.
A committed physician-scientist, Dr. Alkaliby has served as principal and co-investigator in multiple Phase 1–3 clinical trials exploring stem cell therapies for retinal degenerative diseases. His research spans mesenchymal stem cells, CD34+ cells, and embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), utilizing both intravitreal and subretinal delivery approaches.
Fluent in English and Arabic, Dr. Alkaliby is known for his compassionate communication and dedication to patient-centered care. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and EURETINA, where he also mentors early-career retina specialists.
Outside of medicine, he enjoys traveling with his wife and three children, cooking, and staying active through soccer and tennis. Dr. Alkaliby sees patients at multiple Florida Retina Institute locations across North Florida and Southeast Georgia, including Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Fleming Island, Palatka, and Brunswick.
